INTRODUCTION AND AIMS

The Secondary School at EISP comprises the Middle School (grades 6 to 8) and the High School (grades 9 to 12). Our aim is to provide every opportunity in terms of academic programmes, staff expertise and support, resources and specialist equipment for the establishment of academic excellence, while at the same time fostering the all-round development of our students.

The school provides a community in which all students can flourish and to which all parents are welcome. We believe that good links between home and school can create a unity of purpose for young people, making a major contribution to the success of their secondary education.

Our main concern is that students not only attain their academic potential, but also that the school nurtures self-esteem, self-discipline and a sense of responsibility. Each class has a tutor who acts as a friend, adviser and counsellor and is the key figure in the quality of pastoral support and the first point of contact for parents.

A key word in our school is “respect”. It is vital that each person respects the views and welfare of others if we are to be a happy, well-balanced community. A major concern is that no individual student will be permitted to disrupt the education of others. The arrangements for the smooth running of the school are clearly defined for students. The requirements for high standards and good behaviour are fundamental. Our emphasis is to take a positive approach to maintaining good order by rewarding and praising good conduct. However, we also endeavour through consistent and fair procedures to modify unacceptable behaviour.

Throughout the Secondary School, there is a common approach towards high academic standards and care for our students. However, the learning programmes are quite different. In the Middle School, we incorporate the Italian curriculum as prescribed by the Italian Ministry of Education with the objective of preparing students for the ‘Terza Media’ exam at the end of grade 8. This provides an excellent foundation for our High School, but is also necessary if a student is to continue his or her education in an Italian high school. The High School has two phases: phase 1 lasts two years and our students take the British General Certificate of Education exams; phase 2 also lasts two years and our students will take the International Baccalaureate Diploma. There are more details of these courses later in this booklet.

THE OBJECTIVES

There are certain fundamental objectives that are common to both the Middle and the High Schools, namely:

  1. to provide a high quality academic education
  2. to provide a curriculum that enables students to be confident in both English and Italian
  3. to provide a curriculum that is broad and balanced in terms of subject content and in methods of teaching and learning
  4. to enable students to acquire knowledge and skills, and to be able to apply these in appropriate situations
  5. to provide opportunities that enable students to develop their character, both in personal terms and in social contexts
  6. to provide opportunities for all students to achieve the very best that they are capable of
  7. to enable students to have self-respect as well as respect for others
  8. to help students develop enquiring minds, a sense of responsibility, self-discipline and self-esteem
  9. to develop a sense of community and for all students to work and play with a spirit of co-operation
  10. to develop positive relationships between students and between students and adults
  11. to prepare students for the next stage in their educational career
  12. to foster international understanding in its widest sense.
